Using Shortcuts

Shortcuts are a great way to speed up your workflow in EpicDraft. Keep your hands on the keyboard and format your screenplay quickly using these prefix keys.

How to use shortcuts

To use a shortcut, simply type the prefix key followed by Space to apply the desired formatting. The prefix only fires at the start of an empty block, and Space is what triggers it — so typing the same character mid-sentence never reformats anything.

For example, typing @ then Space will format the text as a Character. Another example is typing === then Space to format the text as a Page Break.

The heading prefixes are what outline sections in Library pages are built from — one # for a top-level heading, more for deeper levels.

The editor teaches these

You don't have to memorize the table. When you pause for about a minute on a blank line, the editor shows a ghost hint for one of the prefixes — for example, "Type @ then space for Character" — along with a small chip near the caret. The hints fade in and out gently and never cover your text.

Each prefix stops being taught once you've used it twice; the editor assumes you've got it. The taught prefixes are . (scene heading), @ (character), ' (dialogue), ( (parenthetical), : (transition), ! (action), and > (centered).
