Exporting Pictures & Sound

The Director view has one Export… for everything that comes out of it as pictures and sound.

Open it from:

  • Export… at the right of the header (on a phone, the share button in the transport row);
  • File → Export… while the Director view is showing;
  • Export… in the 3D editor, which opens it on that scene.

In the Writer view, File → Export… exports the script, and production documents such as breakdown sheets and storyboards. See Import & Export.

What

Choose what to export:

  • This scene: the scene you are on.
  • The whole sequence: every scene, in order.
  • The timeline: the scenes on the timeline, in the order it plays them. This only shows when the story branches, so the timeline leaves some scenes out.

Some formats only take one of these, and choosing them switches What for you.

The film formats need Pro and the sequencer, which you turn on in Settings → Labs → Sequencer. Without them, those rows say "Exporting the film is part of Pro." with See Pro, or that the sequencer isn't turned on. See Accounts.

A row that can't be made right now says why: Pick a scene first, Nothing on the timeline yet, Needs a scene with 3D or Add a camera first.

The dialog also says how many of the files in the export you brought in and how many were generated.

Render video

Saves the film as an .mp4: the storyboard with its transitions and camera moves, any footage, and the mixed sound.

  • Size: three sizes, with the height set by your project's aspect ratio.
  • Show the spoken lines as subtitles draws the dialogue in the picture.
  • The dialog shows the length, frame rate and about how large the file will be.

The video is made on this device. Some browsers render faster than real time; others record in real time, so it takes as long as the film runs, and the window must stay open. A browser that can't make video files says so.

For YouTube, TikTok, Vimeo

Pick Where: YouTube, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels or Vimeo. EpicDraft renders the file and saves what the site asks for beside it. It never posts for you.

  • Picture: the site's shape and size. When your film is a different shape, choose Crop to the middle (fills the screen; the sides are cut) or Fit with bars.
  • Captions: save them as an .srt to add on the site, or show the spoken lines in the picture.
  • Title and description (or a caption, for TikTok and Reels), started from the project's logline, with Copy buttons.
  • Cover: for YouTube and Vimeo, a still saved as the thumbnail.

YouTube Shorts warns when the film is longer than 3 minutes. When the render is done, the dialog lists the next steps and Open goes to the site's upload page. On a phone, the caption is copied and the share sheet opens.

Export for editing

A zip with the timeline as OTIO, subtitles (SRT and WebVTT), the takes that play and the sound stems, to finish in a video editor that reads OTIO. Takes that aren't on this device are left out, and the app says how many.

Playable web build

A zip with one page that plays the whole story: video scenes, game rooms and the doors between them, and the footage it needs. Open index.html in any browser. It always takes the whole sequence.

For Blender, Godot, Unreal

One scene's 3D blocking:

  • Scene (.glb): objects, their moves, cameras and clips.
  • Set up for Blender (.zip): the scene plus a script that sets Blender's timeline to match: frame rate, camera cuts, sounds and captions.
  • Open in Blender: starts Blender on this scene. Desktop app, with Blender installed.

See 3D Blocking for what each one carries.

For a video model

What a camera in the scene sees, to guide a video model:

  • Camera clip (video): what the camera sees, start to end.
  • Key frames (PNG): a still at each key moment, zipped.

Choose the Camera (the main camera by default) and the Size. The scene needs a camera.

Captions

The spoken lines as Captions (.srt) or Captions (.vtt). For one scene with captions in its 3D blocking, those are written; otherwise the script's lines are timed to the timeline.

Sound mix

The timeline's sound, mixed: Export mix (WAV) for one file, or Export stems (ZIP) for each track on its own. The same exports are in the timeline's Mix panel.
